What Can Pressure Treated Softwood Sleepers be Used For?

Our Softwood Sleepers are very versatile and can be used for a variety of projects in the garden. So, whether you’re looking to build a flower bed, put in a retaining wall, adding a garden path or edging your border you have come to the right place. They're also great for decking sub frames, giving you a good base to work from.

These sleepers have been green pressure treated which has given them enhanced durability, enabling them to be used outside. You don’t need to do anything prior to use, however, you can paint them if you want to. They will be protected against rot, infestation and fungi.

It’s important to note though that any timber in constant contact with the ground will rot over time, so when this is the case, you need to protect the timber somehow. A common way of doing this is concreting them into place. This will help to preserve the timber and make sure you get the most out of them.

Why Should I Choose Softwood Sleepers Over Hardwood?

There are a couple of main advantages to using Softwood Sleepers over hardwood alternatives, mainly they are lightweight so easy to handle and they are more cost effective. Softwood also looks a lot cleaner than an oak sleeper for example. Although an Oak sleeper will ultimately have a longer lifespan, because of the lack of grading on Oak sleepers they can contain a large amount of rot and dead knots, which are avoided with softwood alternatives.

Why are some Softwoods Pressure Treated?

While you can get durable softwoods like Larch, Douglas Fir and Cedar, there are more perishable timbers like pine and redwood which are a lot cheaper because they are less valuable. By pressure treating these perishable timbers you can give the durability other timbers have naturally at a fraction of the price. This enables them to be used outdoors and even gives them greater strength properties than they would have on their own.
