What can C24 Softwood be used for?

Pressure treated softwood is good for internal structural use. The timber is kiln dried which makes it very stable, minimizing movement, it also makes it lightweight which helps with installing and working the wood.

Its most common uses are:

  • Joists
  • Rafters

As standard our C24 Softwood is supplied out of 4x2 and 9x2 nominal sections, finished to 95mm x 45mm and 220mm x 45mm respectively. We also supply these timbers in a range of lengths including: 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m, 4.2m & 4.8m

What is C24 Graded Timber?

C24 is a structural grade of softwood commonly used in construction, The grade purely indicates the strength of the timber and the load it is able to hold, it doesn't take into account durability and both treated and untreated softwood can be graded to C24.

Timbers that meet C24 tend to be imported from slower grown climates like Scandinavia, where the grain is tighter. This is why Pine is a popular choice for pressure treating, it massively increases the longevity of a wood which is already very strong. Which enables it to compete with some of the naturally stronger and more durable timbers like Larch and Douglas Fir whilst being more cost effective.

Does Pressure Treating Make Timber Stronger?

No, the timber is naturally string before it is pressure treated. The treatment mainly increases durability and helps protect perishable timbers survive external conditions. It does this by protecting against insect infestation and rot. So, whilst it doesn't increase a timbers strength it does enhance the timber, enabling it to be used outside as well as inside. Which massively increases its versatility.
