What is Shiplap Cladding?
Shiplap cladding is a common profile of external cladding, identified by the unique curve under the tongue. This curve acts as a channel that allows water to run off the timber without getting in behind.
We offer two profiles of shiplap cladding, each with a 110mm face coverage. One is EX 16mm x 125mm and the other is EX 22mm x 125mm. The 22mm board is more hard wearing, however the thinner 16mm is lighter making it easier to handle. Both can be used externally. Both profiles are supplied in 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m and 4.8m lengths as standard.
Pressure Treated Softwood offers a good alternative to naturally durable timbers like Oak and Cedar when it comes to cladding. The treatment enhances the wood enabling it to become durable and resistant to rot, infestation and fungi.
How do I install Shiplap Cladding?
Our shiplap cladding is designed to be fitted horizontally with stainless steel nails or screws. Stainless steel fixings will stop any blue staining on the timber and means the fixings won’t rust whilst in contact with the wood. The profiles are designed to be face fixed, with vertical fixing battens fitted with 400-600mm centres depending on preference.
Predrilling the timber will help to prevent it splitting, and you need to rest the boards on the head of the nail or screw. Fitting a breathable membrane behind the cladding will help air to flow around the timber helping to preserve it.
Do I need to do anything before installation?
No, the pressure treatment will protect the timber so you don’t need to treat it further. If you would like to paint the wood you can do after installation.
What are the benefits of pressure treating Softwood?
Pressure treating is a process that allows usually perishable softwoods to become durable when used outdoors. Giving you a more cost effective alternative to naturally durable timbers like Oak and Cedar.
The treatment penetrates the wood increasing its durability so it can be used outside and helps to protect the wood against the elements and decay.
